Step back in time and uncover over 1,700 years of history in Split’s iconic Diocletian’s Palace, while discovering the fascinating story of one of Europe’s oldest Jewish communities.
Jews have been part of this region since the 3rd century, living first in ancient Salona alongside the Romans. After Salona was destroyed in 641, they found refuge within Diocletian’s fortified palace — the heart of today’s Split. Through the centuries, they shaped the city’s history, opening the first dock, quarantine, library, bookstore, and distillery.
On this tour, you’ll walk through ancient gates, Roman temples, hidden cellars, and charming city squares, visit the 1507 synagogue, and see one of Europe’s oldest Jewish cemeteries (est. 1573). Along the way, meet members of the local Jewish community and hear their stories.
